From Dunbar’s Never Caught, ch. 5 & 6

ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Question Set 1 (3 pts)

Re-read chapter 5, “The Blacks in the Family,” in Dunbar’s Never Caught. Then answer the following set of questions:

  1. Describe New York’s and especially Pennsylvania’s relationship to slavery. Why do the laws about slavery differ in these states considering these are both northern states? How does this change your view of what it means to be a northern versus southern state?
  2. What was Washington’s plan for circumventing this anti-slavery legislation in Philadelphia? Does this change your opinion of the first president of the United States, whose visage is etched into Mount Rushmore and printed on the dollar bill?

Min. 150 words (total), providing specific examples using quotes and citations from the text for both questions, using MLA in-line citation style. You must also number your responses to both questions.

NOTE: I WILL NOT GRADE RESPONSES THAT DO NOT PROPERLY QUOTE AND CITE FROM THE TEXT(S), DO NOT MEET THE MIN. WORD COUNT, OR ARE NOT NUMBERED TO CORRESPOND TO THE QUESTIONS ASKED.

Question 2 (2 pts)

Re-read chapters 6, “Life in Philadelphia,” in Dunbar’s Never Caught. Then answer the following set of questions:

  1. Describe some of the free black leaders and the Free African Society in Philadelphia. What influence might they have had on Ona Judge? How did they influence not only her life trajectory, but also her mental and emotional mindset? What do you think life would have been like if she had not met these leaders?

Min. 150 words (total), providing specific examples using quotes and citations from the text for both questions, using MLA in-line citation style. You must also number your responses to both questions.

From Gwynne’s Empire of the Summer Moon, ch. 4

ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Question Set 3 (3 pts)

The cruelty to captives and enemies perpetrated by plains Indians, especially the Comanches, as described in the first few chapters of Empire of the Summer Moon, is problematic for many Americans (then and now) because “Americans like to think of their native aboriginals as in some ways heroic or noble” (Gwynne 44). Re-read chapter four, “High Lonesome,” in S.C. Gwynne’s Empire of the Summer Moon. Answer the following set of questions:

  1. Describe Rachel Plummer’s abduction and captivity (read the very first and last sections of this chapter). What roles did slaves and women play in Comanche society, what tasks were they assigned?
  2. Reflect on descriptions of “the brutal side” of Indian life as described in the first four chapters. What are some examples of this? (You can cite and quote from any of the first four chapters.)

Min. 150 words (total), providing specific examples using quotes and citations from the text for both questions, using MLA in-line citation style. You must also number your responses to both questions.

NOTE: RESPONSES THAT DO NOT PROPERLY QUOTE AND CITE FROM THE TEXT(S), DO NOT MEET THE MIN. WORD COUNT, OR ARE NOT NUMBERED TO CORRESPOND TO THE QUESTIONS ASKED WILL NOT BE GRADED.

Question 4 (2 pts)

Again, cruelty to captives and enemies perpetrated by plains Indians, especially the Comanches, as described in the first few chapters of Empire of the Summer Moon, is problematic for many Americans (then and now). In the middle of chapter four, Gwynne poses the following question, “What explains such a radical difference in the moral systems of the Comanches and the whites they confronted?” (45–46).

  1. Can you offer a good answer to this? Or is it even a fair question? You might consider everything that you have read and studied about American slavery, including how Anglo-Europeans (Whites) treated not only the Indians (on whose lands they were encroaching) but also the peoples of African decent they enslaved across the American South. How should non-Indian historians make sense of the Indian violence on the “frontier,” including abduction, torture, and rape? Should it be judged in the same “moral universe” of the Euro-Americans? There is a lot to unpack here, but take it where you will.

Min. 150 words (total). No citations needed for this last, personal-reflection question.

NOTE: I WILL NOT GRADE RESPONSES THAT DO NOT ADDRESS EVERYTHING ASKED AND MEET THE MIN. WORD COUNT.
