Portfolio development is a professional requirement, enabling a professional to provide documentary evidence of skills, knowledge, and experience from a range of sources (Casey, D.C. & Egan, D, 2010). Developing a professional portfolio is a significant when pursuing professional or academic advancement opportunities. Portfolios help potential employers reflect on one’s experiences and skills while also allowing identification of one’s academic and professional growth (Hannans & Olivo, 2017). Professional portfolios should help to give the viewer a clear picture of who a person is as a professional. The first strategy in developing a portfolio suggested in the journal Craft a positive nursing digital identity with an ePortfolio is to decide which platform best fits your needs (Hannans & Olivo, 2017). LinkedIn, is one example of displaying one’s self-making professional connections but it is a type of social media and it does not allow for personalization of the webpage (Hannans & Olivo, 2017). A well-constructed portfolio will show how learning has occurred and development of skills and knowledge over time and have the potential to be a tool to be a resource to support career change and ultimately help a practitioner to implement and promote best practice (Casey, D.C. & Egan, D, 2010).

Another great strategy to use when developing a professional portfolio is to use a “less is best approach,” it should be clear, instructive, and 100% accurate (Smith, 2011). The article How to Build a Professional Portfolio suggests providing examples of your work in your portfolio, such as evaluations or lesson plans that you created (Loretto, 2019). Portfolios are extra to a professional’s resume and could aide in the interview process. As with resumes, portfolios document accomplishments and state timelines of accomplishments.
