Transcription assignment
Question Description
- Read Hepburn, A. & Bolden, G. B. (2017) (Links to an external site.). Getting started with transcription. Chapter 2 in Transcribing for social research (pp.13-20). Chicago: Sage.
- Complete the tutorial on transcription http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/soc/faculty/schegloff/TranscriptionProject/ (Links to an external site.)
- Download and install audacity http://audacityteam.org/ (Links to an external site.)
- Choose your recordings. If on your feedback I told you that you had terrible audio quality, do NOT use those recordings. You may take new ones OR use other ones from the class. If you attempt to transcribe something with terrible audio quality (e.g. hard to hear without amazing headphones in a quiet environment with audio over 100%) then I will not give you credit for correctly transcribing anything I can’t hear. The onus is on YOU to ensure good quality audio.
- You are to transcribe AT LEAST 40 seconds worth recordings assignment, you must draw from 2 different recordings (eg a total of 40 seconds)
- Setting up your word document correctly, using courier NEW font, numbering EACH line, type out the words for what everyone says. Spelling should be close to correct. Use headphones. Restart the numbering for each new transcript. You should put both transcripts in one document. Copy the formatting I’ve presented in class. Use the chapter 2 reading on setting up documents. - Then go through and add pausing. Use Audacity (Links to an external site.) or PRAAT to make this easier.
- Then go through and add terminal intonation. Don’t assume questions have rising intonation. Don’t assume statements have falling intonation. Listen to Prezi and do the Tutorial to learn to hear the difference.
- Now add timing, transcribe overlap, speed and stress.
