A 2012 survey of over 1000 RNs showed that the primary barrier to implementation of evidence-based practices was coming from leadership (Wilson, 2012). Most nurses in leadership positions are seasoned and were trained before evidence-based practices were pushed as the norm. A lack of continuing education on the part of management leads to a decreased understanding of the importance of changing to meet the standards found by research. Encouraging continued education and studies in current events and procedures will help to influence leadership that change is good and that patient outcomes will improve with said changes.
Another barrier to overcome is the nursing shortage, making time a valuable commodity (Alatawi, et al, 2020). There are so few new nurses entering the workforce and more seasoned nurses leaving that trying to find time between training new nurses and filling in gaps in staffing needs makes implementing new practices lower on the list of important things to do. It takes time to research best practices and implement changes accordingly, and time is precious when prioritizing between patient safety due to safe staffing levels. Ensuring that management has time to develop practices based on best evidence and that there is also adequate time to implement those changes is of utmost importance and should be prioritized along with staffing issues, even if it means delegation and approving overtime.
