Part 1

Having experienced a robust debate discussion regarding if these two laws should be flexible, it is time to shift gears a bit and consider the broader implications of changing laws from an ethical and philosophical perspective. Read this article to frame this week’s discussion. Complete the following:

  • What is your initial perspective after reading the article?
  • Based on your review of the article, is there an ethical/philosophical consideration that supports/ challenges the article’s considerations?

Part 2: Based on the first initial of your last name:

  • First initial M-Z: provide an argument ‘FOR’ there being an ethical/philosophical reasoning for changing laws. Submit your position by posting in the Unit 2 Debate forum, under the ‘FOR’ topic.
  • First initial A-L: provide an argument ‘AGAINST’ there being an ethical/philosophical reasoning for changing laws. Submit your position by posting in the Unit 2 Debate forum, under the ‘AGAINST’ topic.

In both considerations, provide research that supports your assertions.

The Legal and Ethical Environment of Business

This article by Matthew Bransgrove was great. I appreciate the numbers of 18,000 public

acts of laws passed and that four-fifths have been repealed or partially repealed. This

shows that we must make changes, however we must take it slow and carefully to get it

right. It seems to me that certainty is something we need so we can feel a sense of safe,

comfortable, and knowing what each day brings so we can expect what tomorrow brings

helps us maintain a certain lifestyle. The stock market is a prime example of certainty,

when nations do not have issues and there is confidence from day to day the stock market

is good or can be strong, but once people or nations start having conflicts then we see a

reverse and see the market drop and that hurts many of our pocketbooks or retirements.

I believe big corporations do survive better then the smaller businesses and they do have

the ability to navigate through the laws and understanding how to work with big

government to find outcomes that work for their business. However, I also have seen

where city and local municipalities are the biggest offender of killing off small businesses

by their legislation in laws including wages. When cities like Seattle raise minimum wage to

$18.00 an hour and you have a diner that has 13 employees or a bar with 10 employees and

not to mention equipment repair shops, music stores, and any other small business it is

extremely hard for them to survive.

2- the second response for the other students paragraph : William Dozier

  • After reading the article I was reminded of two different times when I was given those chooses but felt like laws. My marriage was like that. There were ideas/rules set forth in the beginning. An agreement of sorts I guess you’d say. As time went by each year or every so often she’d make changes that how she was feeling or wanted to do at the time. At first I just went along to get along. Then after a few years and so many changes I grew angry and felt that it was just too much and it felt less and less like something we were in, rather something that was made for her to have an advantage over me.
  • I decided that we had to come to an agreement that fit both of us and it stay that way with no more changes. For a while it went smooth and was seeming to work. She, at some point years later started to change up an fall back into her own way of doing things. She gave me an ultimatum once I spoke on it. Needless to say things went south after that and for the next few years things continued to plummet before it all ended.
  • Another time was when I was in the military. There were regulations we had to follow but we were also told that the Army was always changing. You come in and are taught a set of regs then come up with a system. After a while you get used to it and then they switch up on you. Now, you have to learn these new regulations and come with a new system to stay in line with them. Often times there close to the old ones meaning no major changes need to be made to your system. Other times they’re drastic and it’s like they flipped your life upside down.
  • These changes not only mess with your life in physical ways like your time, sleep, work and, or leisure time. It also effects you mental state as well. I’m some cases you find yourself getting upset with people you wouldn’t ordinarily get upset with. You get angry quicker than normal or even find that you’re no longer interested in the things that used to bring you joy.
  • With all that in my past, knowing how the changes effected me and what they caused I’m against the idea of laws changing. In some instances it’s cool or ok but there has to be a set time for you to get used to the change
  • Also there had to be a grace period leading up to the change where you know what it will be and you have time to get everyone used to the idea. People need to to get their lives ready for these changes in advance. I believe this is ok and best if there has to be changes.
