DQ 1 – Directed patrol is a form of policing that has been used to try to reduce crime in certain areas. In this form of policing, police officers are sent to areas that are known as “hot spots” where crime is most occurring. According to McGarrell, Chermak, Weiss, and Wilson (2001), directed patrol includes assigning officers to a specific area and liberating them from reacting to calls for administration so they can participate in proactive examination and authorization of skeptical activities. Directed patrol is believed to be generally encouraging as a crime control device when it is focused on high crime geographic areas and to problem areas of crime inside crime geographic regions. The most widely recognized technique in a coordinated directed patrol exertion is the utilization of traffic stops. Traffic stops are conjectured to give an obstruction impact through obvious expanded police existence and the expanded number of contacts among police and residents in a specific area. Some recommend that they likewise may have a debilitation impact through the identification of criminal operations and ensuing arrest or seizure of guns and drugs. Directed patrol activities can be thought of as one methodology of a more extensive group of procedures known as police crackdowns. Crackdowns have been characterized as “increments in either the conviction of seriousness of legitimate police response to a particular sort of crime or all crime in a particular area. Police crackdowns establish an abrupt, generally proactive change in action. Crackdowns have been utilized to address both general crime issues in a specific area and explicit crime issues, including drug deals, prostitution, burglary, and being under the influence while driving (McGarrell et al., 2001).

DQ2- Directed patrol is a tactic used to reduce crime by delegating officers to a certain area that has a higher crime rate in order to prevent crime from occurring (McGarrell et al., 2001). Directed patrol reduces crime because if there are more visible officers in a high crime area, crime will begin to decrease due to the perpetrators not wanting to commit crime in front of the police. The effectiveness of hot spots policing is widely supported but past research focuses primarily in high-crime areas within large metropolitan areas (Schaefer, n.d.). Directly patrolling hot spots will decrease crime rates because if there are more police officers, criminals will not attempt as many crimes in these areas. One of the primary functions of the police force is to prevent crime and protect citizens. By using the tactic of direct patrol, police officers can locate high areas of crime to increasingly patrol in order to deter crime.

DQ 3- The use of directed patrol reduces crime. By using directed patrol, you are reducing the effectiveness of hot spots by implementing policing (Schaefer, 2019). This is widely supported but past research focuses primarily in high-crime areas within large metropolitan areas. Without the use of directed patrol, you will see an increase in criminal damage to property crimes, as well as robberies and burglaries. The use of these procedures is to implement a form of deterrence for an offender. Typically, criminals camp out to scope a location prior to committing a crime in which the criminal is looking for their best chance to attempt the crime as well as how much officer presence is in the area. If a crime is being scoped out for hours without seeing officer presence, then you can guarantee at attempt is going to be made. In summary it is recommended to use directed patrol procedures in high crime areas in order to successfully reduce the productivity of crime occurrence.
