Topic 1: Community’s influence on Socialization

The physical characteristics of a community such as density, composition, noise arrangement, types of houses and play settings can affect how people behave by having positive effects on social relationships because of things like having the opportunity to mingle and the community having places to sit or play in order to do so. Popular composition refers to the adaptability and stability of the people in the neighborhood, the rate of the community’s population turnover is a measure of the adaptability and stability of its citizens. “This rate affects the socialization of children in that it influences the interactions with newcomers, as well as the degree of community involvement.” (Berns, 2016, pg. 380) Noise can play a huge role in children’s education depending on where the community is, according to the textbook children who lived near freeways and aircraft and road traffic noise did less well academically in reading and math as well as struggling with reading comprehension compared to those who live in quiet areas. (Berns, 2016) The psychical designs of a house structure can also affect children’s opportunities for physical activities, “When houses face the street or a courtyard, people have a common place of contact.” (Berns, 2016, pg. 381) This allows the child to be watched from inside by looking out the window whereas a house that is built with no common area, like apartments the child can’t be supervised unless they’re with an adult or their parent.”Play settings can influence socialization by the types of activities that occur in them and by rather or not adults are present to supervise.” (Berns, 2016, pg. 381) The economic characteristics of the community affect people’s lives by shaping the everyday lives of those who live there. Community economics affect things like the cost of housing, education, health care and transportation. “When families have an adequate income, they are better able to meet their children’s material, intellectual, and emotional needs and help become healthy, productive adults.” (Berns, 2016, pg. 382) Failing to address the economical needs of families, especially things like poverty can cause the community social consequences which will affect the whole community. Things like unemployment relate to how children socialize, when parents are having a difficult time financially and share these problems with their children the children then experience psychological distress. (McLoyd, Aikens, & Burton, 2006) The social and personal characteristics of the community can affect people’s relationship with things like the setting of the neighborhood, this is where the children go to explore and interact with other children within their community as well as adults socializing with others in their community. Community interaction is important in development because it is a function of the supportive links with other settings the children might be in like a family or school according to Bronfenbrenner. Factors like the size of the community, social diversity, shared norms and valued types of social relationships like Gemeinschaft relationships can show mutual dependence and care for one another. This type of relationship is interpersonal, close, and informal, it shows mutual trust as concerns. On the other hand, Gesellschaft relationships are more independent, practical and formal. In this type of relationship people can relate to each other by paying for services that are rendered. “Children who primarily experience gemeinschaft relationships have socialization experiences that are very different from those of children who primarily experience gesellschaft relationships.” (Berns, 2016, pg.386)

Topic 2: Caring Communities

The things that are being done to address the needs of families who are homeless in the community is the High Desert Homeless Services which is assisting residents who have been relocated from their house due to loss of income or natural disasters and empower homeless individuals as well as families by providing skills in order to become self-sufficient. They are also in partnership with HDHS in order to help their homeless clientes become productive citizens again as well as offering employment training, job search, single and family temporing housing and transportation services. Another resource I found is the Catholic Charities located in Victorville, California which provides help with rental assistance, eviction prevention, utility assistance, transportation assistance, temporary shelter, food pantries and food vouchers. High Desert Second Chances which is located in Hesperia is a non-profit organization which helps the homeless and hungry with job search assistance, SSI and/or medical benefits as well as other help, food, and clothing, and lastly is the Housing Authority of the county of San Bernardino which provides assistance with low cost housing throughout San Bernardino County. The things in the community that are being done to support children who have disabilities, been maltreated or abandoned are present-focused treatment provided by Victorville Community Support Services (VCSS) which helps clients who have a history of trauma and/or substance abuse. Seeking Safety focuses on five key principles; safety as the overarching goal, integrated treatment, a focus on ideals to counteract the loss of ideals in both PTSD and substance abuse, four content areas: cognitive, behavioral, interpersonal, and case management, and attention to clinician processes. Another service VCSS provides is the Incredible Years child program which consists of 60 classroom lesson plans that focus on strengthening the child’s social and emotional competencies, like being able to understand and communicate feelings as well as using effective problem solving strategies, managing anger, practicing friendships and conversational skills as well as learning how to behave appropriately in the classroom. The VCSS provides other programs like Community Wholeness and Enrichment and SUCCESS 1st Early Wraparound which provides short-term therapy sessions for the Prevention and Early Interventions (PEI) to youth ages 16 to 25 who experienced mild to moderate mental health issues as well as providing services to children 0-15 years with seriously emotionally disturbed, unserved, underserved children/adolescents. B.E.S.T Opportunities is a program that encourages values as well as making differences in people who have disabilities and support them by connecting and engaging them with their community. This disability program helps these people learn how to live on their own, read and/or write, as well as controlling their feelings. After reading some success stories provided on the website the program helps people become more independent, have a growth in their confidence as well as making the program feel as fun as possible and providing a safe environment.
