Health IT Benefits and Risks Reflection [WLOs: 2, 4] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3]

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum,

  • Read Chapters 21, 22, 24, 25, and 27 of Health Informatics: An Interprofessional Approach.
  • Analyze the Health IT standards discussed in Chapter 22 of your text.

Using the information below, respond to the discussion question provided to you by your instructor. Based on your Ashford University major of study (e.g.,+ Health Information Management, Nursing, Health Administration, Health and Human Services or Public Health) analyze benefits and risks associated with informatics systems and exchange of data in these settings. Specifically, analyze your response based on the Health IT standards discussed in Chapter 22 of your text. Evalute two of the most substantive risks involved in using these informatics systems based on the privacy and security standards discussed in Chapter 26 of your text. Reflect on the following information:

Society has high expectations of the benefits associated with the effective adoption of informatics systems. Professionals in all areas of health care and health and human services facilitate the effectiveness of these informatics systems by adopting and utilizing standards for the management of patient information in both their clinical and administrative practice. These standards relate to how information is both classified and documented in informatics systems. Reflect on the expected benefits of health informatics applications and the use of informatics standards to support the realization of these benefits.

Initial Post: Your initial post should be a minimum of 350 words. Utilize a minimum of three unique credible or scholarly sources (excluding the textbook or other course provided resources) cited in APA format, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center’s Citing Withing Your Paper (Links to an external site.) resource.

Instructions: Respond to at least two of your peers with each response being a minimum of five full sentences. Compare and contrast how your peers’ approach to the informatics solution proposed is alike or different than the approach you recommended in your major of study. Who are the specific stakeholders that your major of study must focus on in the development of the informatics solution?

Health & Human Services

One of the beneficial impact of IT services is improved diagnostics and patient outcomes. The HealthIT.gov website stated, “With EHRs, every provider can have the same accurate and up-to-date information about a patient. This is especially important with patients who are: seeing multiple specialist, receiving treatment in emergency settings and making transitions between care settings.” (u.a.,2020). When physicians are able to access information about a patient that is current and they can see the patient’s previous visits to other health care providers, this allows an advantage for the physician to provide better care to the patient and allow physicians to see a pattern if opioid addiction is present.

Our text expressed, “One terminology is unlikely to meet the needs of the wide range of disciplines within healthcare, yet adopting quality terminologies is crucial for Meaningful Use of EHRs.” (Nelson & Staggers, 2018). Systemized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) and International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) are two multidisciplinary terminologies related to health IT. Both of the standard terminologies provide uniformity within the healthcare system, the hospital, physicians, nurses, case workers and health clinics can have a better understanding of EHRs with the standard use of the same codes. This will help reduce errors within different disciplines if everyone is on the same accord and better care can be provided to the patient/client. According to Giannagelo, “The foundation of healthcare information is the encoded data of which standard terminologies are key and necessary for electronic health record interoperability. Standardising and codifying data provides for better data for measuring the quality, safety and efficacy of care.” (2006, p.11). EHRs have been responsible for improving the healthcare system for many people and health IT information can determine specific problems to certain groups of people or areas. If equal access to healthcare is given to all Americans more people would be able to benefit from the finding of the IT health solutions. Certain minorities are not receiving the proper care because of poor insurance or no insurance at all. The current use of health informatics is an excellent tool to use for patient-centered care and to improve how care is given to people.
