Plagiarism is an act against honesty and integrity, and it can be done purposefully or accidentally. Three examples of plagiarism are direct copying from another source without citing that source, paraphrasing without citing, and reusing one’s own work. Plagiarism can be seen as common among students and is a concern for nursing students entering the nursing profession. When done intentionally, plagiarism is cheating and is dishonest, and when unintentional, it can be due to ignorance (Falkner, 2018). Neither cheating, dishonesty, ignorance, or lack of integrity are qualities that anyone would want to see carried into the nursing profession. “Nursing is a profession based on ethics, integrity, and trust; committing plagiarism is a direct insult to such an esteemed profession” (Falkner, 2018). According to Falkner, students who get into the habit of plagiarizing may not fully understand material or grasp concepts and so will not be able to fully appreciate or apply the knowledge of their baccalaureate degree (Falkner, 2018). This damages the very nature of who a nurse with a BSN is supposed to be capable of. “Also, the inability to thoroughly evaluate and understand presented concepts may lead to an inability to appreciate latest EBP and its implications for nursing practice” (Falkner, 2018). Applying evidence based practice is extremely important in nursing practice and not having the skill to utilize it would be detrimental to improving patient outcomes. The public perception of nurses would be affected because nurses are seen as honest and trustworthy. If a nurse were to be seen having a poor work ethic such as by taking shortcuts to make their work easier or having a lack of integrity in their charting, how could they be trusted by the public to care for them as patients? A nursing student who falls into the habit of plagiarizing in order to make their work easier is likely to carry on a poor work ethic into their nursing profession and practice later on. This would be seen by a lack of integrity and expertise in their work and an inability to effectively utilize EBP, which directly effects patient outcomes.

Two things I will do to ensure academic integrity in my work is to not take shortcuts and to remind myself of the kind of nurse I want to be. Taking shortcuts might make things easier for me and save me time now, but it will not be beneficial for me in my future career as a nurse. By putting in my time and hard work now as a student, I will be able to uphold academic integrity and carry that integrity into my nursing profession. Also by reminding myself that I want to be an honest and trustworthy nurse I will strive to keep an honest and moral ethic in all my work that I do as a student and as a future nurse.

Three examples of plagiarizing are intentional, unintentional, and paraphrasing without proper citation (Falkner, 2018). Price defines plagiarism as “the use of another’s words or ideas without clear identification of the source (Price, 2014).

Plagiarizing as a student can have ill effects on one’s enrollment in school and as a nurse. When one plagiarizes you lose trust in the person and start to question the rest of the nursing profession. Plagiarizing is cheating and lying, when one does this, they lose their credibility with classmates or co-workers. As nurses, we are held to a higher standard and patients trust us when they are at their most vulnerable state. Plagiarizing during school can affect how one performs their job in the future. One might not be honest with charting or giving reports, which could affect the patient’s health. According to Falkner “nursing is a profession based on ethics, integrity, and trust; committing plagiarism is a direct insult” (Falkner, 2018). Plagiarizing during school can affect one’s ability to develop critical thinking skills, which is essential to evidence-based practice and improving patient outcomes (Falkner, 2018). Stevens states “these skills are the foundation for fully appreciating knowledge gained in higher education” (Stevens, 2013).

Two things I will do to ensure academic integrity in my work are I will give credit to the sources I use and will use tools like LopesWrite to verify my work is my own. I will be honest in everything I do as I embark in the journey to receive my BSN.

Re: Topic 1 DQ 2

Plagiarism is defined as the act of taking somebody else’s work, thoughts, ideas and recording them as your own. In several occasions, plagiarism is often seen as violation of copyright laws and thus categorized under theft offense (Shukla & Maurya, 2017). Consequentially, in academics plagiarism can earn you a suspension or failure. Plagiarism can be either intentionally or unintentionally. Intentionally including summarizing. Other forms of plagiarism include paraphrasing and quoting. Summarizing imply the act of condensing another person’s topic and fail to acknowledge the source. However, summarizing may not directly quote the exact words used by the source because people read different books. Paraphrasing on the other hand means changing a sentence word by word to fit in the current situation.

Nursing students must understand the consequences that come along with plagiarism, and learn to practice honesty and ethical standards. Plagiarism not only affect nursing practice but also professional reputation thus putting nursing professional status at stake (Lynch, Everett, Ramjan, Callins, Glew & amp; Salamonson, 2017). Among the things, I will do to ensure I practice honesty and integrity in my work including preparing well for my exams, keeping track of my cited work, reading and breaking the task into small portions to be more manageable. Additionally, I will seek guidance from my instructors and strictly follow instructions stated during exams.
