Question Description

Q. just give them feedback from down below Choose any 2 from 1-3 (one paragraph each is fine)

here is the question..

  • Fill a wine glass completely with water and cover it with a piece of plastic (such as the lid from a margarine container), being careful to remove any air.
  • Invert the glass.Try it a few more times.

1. I filled my wine glass completely with water and then covered the top of the glass with a piece of plastic, then the glass was filled to the brim and no longer room for air. When I picked up the glass and slowly inverted it, the plastic lid used during the experiment suctioned to the top of the wine glass almost as if it was sealed shut.

I inverted the glass not once but a few times and the plastic remained intact at first. There was a small air bubble in the bottom of the wine glass that moved when I flipped the glass. The water eventually forced the plastic off of the top of the wine glass when it was upside down for a while causing the water to come rushing out.

In this experiment, all of the air was removed from the wine glass but when flipped the pressure of the water caused a instant suction between the plastic and the cup, but eventually the pressure of the water being on the lid caused the suction to loosen and cause the water to come out.

2. This experiment was fun because I learned something new.

No matter how full I filled the water in the glass, a little air sneaked in before I closed with it with a plastic lid. Therefore when the glass is inverted, there is a quick transfer of a big bubble from the bottom to the opposite side of the glass.

The magical part of this was when I decided to let the water come out while inverted, the water did not. I noticed the wine glass was stuck to the lid and the water was going nowhere.

After a minute of holding the experiment upside down with the water stuck in, I believe the lightweight of the plastic lid could no longer contain the pressure of the water so it all came out.

I went as far as to try the experiment a 4th time. This time around, when the glass of water with lid was inverted, the water could hold for as long as 4 minutes. My overall opinion is that if I had much patience, the water could hold longer.

3. On my first attempt, I underestimated just how completely full we had to make the glass and I was very confused when nothing was happening and the lid would just fall right off. After coming back to read some comments I realized my mistake and tried again with a filled to the brim glass. The plastic lid had a very strong grip to the glass and held all of the water in. I don’t know much about physics, so I’d have to guess that the lack of air in the glass leaves the air around the glass with nowhere to go, and perhaps it attempts to make its way into the glass so hard that it ends up pushing the lid onto it. Again, major guessing here, but this was definitely interesting to think about.
