Question Description

Lesson 11

(respond with 150 words) Carolina

I have been in quite a few job interviews. I can not remember a time where the questions were out of line; however, I remember one time I applied for a fast food restaurant and had the unfortunate experience of being interviewed by a manager that looked like she was having an awful day. She was rude and made facial expressions while I answered the questions, and that made me feel uncomfortable. I am not sure if she did not like me, but the interview atmosphere was stressful. She did not explain to me the process or what I could expect from the interview. It was clear that she did not prepare for it. I also felt that she was not interested in what I had to say; she did not try to connect with me when she was asking the questions. I was not going to stand to her level, so I politely answered all her questions despite how horrible I felt.
I believe this interview was a semistructured interview, which is an interview-based on structured questions. However, some time is set aside for unstructured interviewing to allow the interviewer to probe into ambiguous or missing information uncovered during the structured portion of the interview (Williams, 2018). Nevertheless, they called me two days later, and I rejected their offer.

In response to this weeks discussion question regarding a previous job interview, I want to use an example of a previous interview I had with United Airlines for a flight attendant position where i was brought out to Houston, Texas. The interview process for a flight attendant position is a full day that includes face to face interviews both one on one as well as in a group setting, given scenarios to play out and present your service and communication skills and also some physical tests as well as questions regarding your resume and how past positions will ensure you are a reliable and proper candidate to become a flight attendant. The interview questions consist of real life scenarios, why you want to be a flight attendant, what makes you qualified to attend training and take on this new role, questions regarding health and safety of yourself as well as others and then if you make it you endure a 10 year work history, drug test and fingerprints. It is a very extensive process and also a very intense job to take on. The interview is also an amazing experience because you meet so many like minded people and you all are so ambitious about the same thing. My interview was a group of 20 candidates but only two made it to the end and only one made it through training. The interviews are amazing because you develop friendships and are able to build a network with individuals who may one day be in airlines across the country or in various parts of the world. The aviator industry is highly competitive but those who dream of being an airline employee never give up. I will always value what I learned in that interview and have been able to apply that experience to other interviews since then within and outside the field of aviation.

Lesson 12

(respond with 150 words) Chrisnel

After reading Chapter 12 and watching the video lecture, discuss and describe some advantages of diversity at your business or college and give an example that supports your opinion. After watching the lecture video and reading the chapter, some of the advantages of diversity at my work places based on my personal experiences are increased productivity, improved creativity,Increased profits, improved employee engagement, reduced employee turnover, improved company reputation, wider range of skills, improved cultural insights and great teamwork. Another benefit of cultural diversity in the workplace is the increase in creativity among teams, and the ability to have a more diverse set of solutions to specific problems. Many recent studies have shown that increased cultural diversity in the workplace can lead to greater profits for the organization. This is great because it increases employee engagement and at times increases employee motivation as well, which is great for the company.Having a wider range of skills and knowledge available to them, these companies often enjoy a more diverse and adaptable range of products and services that they can offer to their respective markets. From my experience at working at both Walmart and Cvs is that some of the advantages of diversity in the workplace is that it educates you on certain things as well as makes you appreciate and respect other peoples whose culture might be different than yours.

According to Williams (2018), the term “diversity” is classified as “a variety of demographic, cultural, and personal differences among an organization’s employees and customers” (p. 259). Furthermore, Williams (2018) pointed out that diversity in a workplace has positive outcomes for the organization as well as for its employees and customers (p. 262). For example, scholars have mentioned the good benefit of diversity when it becomes part of an organization such as “costs saving” (e.g., reduce employee turnover, absenteeism, etc), “attract and retain talented workers”, increase business growth (e.g., increase of 57 million in Hispanic American population equal to $1.3 trillion in purchasing power) (Williams, 2018, p. 262). The workplace diversity has been changing and increasing since 1970s, and it continues changing very fast (Williams, 2018, pp. 258-259). For example, law firms have been adapting and changing to this new diversity concept over time with the primary objective of gaining new customers while keeping current ones happy. To do so, employers (e.g., law firms) have been hiring employees with different background and cultures to assist customers which documents translations, verbal communication translation (e.g., interpreters), and so forth. Another example of diversity is seeing in courtrooms when the Plaintiff or the Defendant does not speak nor understand English, so an interpreter is provided or appointed (in most cases) by the court during the case duration to assist while finding final resolutions to the case.
