Part 1

Teachers will forever have an impact on their student’s lives, whether good or bad. I can remember many experiences from my time as a student in junior high and high school, and that was well over two decades ago. We must strive to make these memories and experiences positive, lasting impressions that will affect the student’s life for the better.

Teachers must always lead by example. It is not all about “do as I say and not as I do.” What students see us do is often what they will emulate. I like Glasser’s concept of influencing students in a positive way rather than being demanding and forceful. It is helpful when students are interested in what they learn. They will be more apt to desire to do the work, and produce more quality work and better grades (chapter 9, pages 199-200.) I remember many times that I was bored not only with the monotony of the classroom lectures, but also with the material being taught. We as educations should take the time to seek and understand what it necessary for students to desire to do the work assigned and create ways that we can present it in an interesting way.

Kagan stated that we must include students in how to maintain classroom by involving students in the process (chapter 14, page 251). It does not stop with putting the rules on the wall and then telling students to follow them. It is a continuous process. Teachers have to work with the students process daily on how to abide by these rules so the students with be responsible and learn how to make good decisions in their everyday lives.

As it states in the Bible in the book of Titus, we have been given grace and mercy by God, granting us another chance to get it right and we should grant our students that same opportunity. Students are expected to make mistakes and it is our job to correct them and provide them feedback as to prevent these from happening in the future, or at the very least, the proper way in which to handle them.

Part 2

I will use my faith by doing what God ask of me. “And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.” (Matthew 21:22) In Glasser’s work it is not about being in control. It is not about having power over students. Boss management and lead management was a great way to break it down. When we plan for discipline and classroom management we have to keep the faith that it will work. We can not teach anything to the students if we don’t have anything rooted in us to teach. We lead the classroom with structure. We have to structure our faith in teaching our students. “Build strong relationships with your students” said Glasser. (p. 212) You have to establish a relationship with students in order to understand them. I truly believe you can’t discipline what you do not understand. You have step out on faith when it comes to doing anything and know that God has you covered. “You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self controlled, and sound in faith, in love, and in endurance.” (Titus 2:1-2)

Part 3

We all know that being a teacher is not an easy task but someone has to do it. I am a Seventh-Grade Science Teacher and I absolutely love my job. These students are between the ages 12-14. During this age, students are erratic, need of adult guidance but pushes away from the adult and shows respect for teachers who shows respect or concern for them. (p.5) This is me all day everyday! My students will tell anyone that Ms. Clark is mean, funny but loving. I will give them anything that I have and ALL of my love. (1John 4:8) “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love….

We must understand our student’s needs and address that need. This way the student will not misbehave in a negatively manner. I work in a K-12 school district where all the students receive free breakfast and lunch. I agree with Payne (2001) states that the major driving force is survival, personal relationships, and entertainment. (Proverbs 22:2) The rich and the poor meet together. As a christian, we need to teach others that we are the same. As a teacher/educator, I must do the following: 1.Maintain professional demeanor at all times. 2. Maintain a safe, secure, and supportive environment for learning. 3. Show sensitivity to and understanding of students’ personalities, backgrounds, and needs. 4. Help student’s acquire important knowledge, skills, and attitude. 5. Provide interesting , worthwhile instructional activities. 6. Help students learn to behave responsibly and strive for excellence.(p.26) (Colossians 3:23). Nelson and Lott stated that the key lies in helping students see themselves as capable, significant, and able to control their own lives.(p.63). I know that my students can and will see themselves this way once they leave my classroom.I have a strong foundation and principles.

I also agree with Morrish’s approach. Teachers should clearly communicate what they expect of students and then accept nothing less. They should make clear that no negotiation is involved. They do this without threatening or raising their voices. They simply say, with confidence and authority, “This is what you must do. This is the job you are her for. Now let’s get on with it.” (Morrish, 1997,p.65) As christians, we have rules also. We abide by our Ten Commandments.(Deuteronomy 5:1-18)
