Part 1

Morrish made some valuable points in the reading this week. He states that educators give too much power to students too soon and they are not able to handle that power early on. He believes in the teacher as the authoritarian. Rules should be set by the teacher and students need to be taught how to follow those rules. There should not be any bargaining when it comes to the rules. You obey them and if you do not, it is not necessary to always punish the students, but have them to redo the incorrect behavior that has occurred. This helps them learn from their mistakes. I totally agree with him on this point, as students do not always care about the consequences; some with accept their punishment and move on.

This brings me to another point that he speaks about. Students should not have the option to misbehave. It should not just result in them being scolded, punished, or chastised for their mistakes. When disobedience happens, the action should be corrected immediately by the student, and it should be done each time an act of disobedience occurs. Just as it states in the Book of Exodus, chapter 20, verse 12, children are to honor their mother and father so that they will have a full, long life. This honor system should follow them wherever they go, so that they will always honor ones who have authority over them.

He stated that it is our responsibility to make them good citizens by teaching them how to act, behave, and conduct themselves in society. Sometimes, they do not obtain this training at home, so the burden falls on the teacher to instill these qualities into the students. They need to learn to obey authority, and we can not only tell them how this is done, but show them, and inform them bases on experiences that we have had in the past.

Part 2

According to Morrish, the blame for the ever-growing problem of discipline in school’s rests at least in part on popular discipline theories, which he believes have gone to excess in allowing students to make choices concerning how they will conduct themselves in school. What are your thoughts about Morrish’s ideas?

The things that Morrish stated in regards to ongoing situations of behavior in today’s schools are so true. From personal experience in the school system the main issues in the classroom and schools are the discipline problem. In my opinion Morrish presented a relevant point in stating that there are many reasons for behavior in classroom; one thing in particular was he stated that most students are defiant and manipulative and that is comes from undesirable trends in society. He wants us to understand that to approach the ongoing discipline problems in schools we must approach student discipline by teaching what is acceptable and what is unacceptable before they are given opportunity to make choices. This is where the setting foundation in the beginning of the school year about classroom behavior acceptable and unacceptable with consequences and rewards. I my opinion we are giving the students too much power and not punishing the students for negative actions in the classroom. We are setting them up for failure in society in regards to following rules. Morrish ideas are supported by research and his experience he has also shown that there’s a change for discipline and the schools are addressing the issues in schools. it’s time for “Real Discipline”, as Morrish which he defines as is a lot more than simply giving choices to students and then dealing with the after effective.

Part 3

Unit 3 Discussion Question 1: According to Morrish, the blame for the ever-growing problem of discipline in schools rests at least in part on popular discipline theories, which he believes have gone to excess in allowing students to make choices concerning how they will conduct themselves in school. What are your thoughts about Morrish’s ideas? Referring back to ch.5 pg. 102 in Building Classroom Management, Morrish ideas on discipline would be very helpful in the classroom. I can relate to quite a few, such as discipline is a process not an event which means in my opinion a process is something that one has to go through in order to get results. Another one is discipline isn’t what you do when students misbehave, It’s what you do so they won’t. “Nip it in the bud” is what I say, stop it before it starts, just to name a few. In Deuteronomy 5: 12 it say Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you NIV. Honor: to obey, to have respect, showing discipline, If your student will abide by your rules there will be less behavior in the classroom.
