D3: Using the MLB steroids case as an example, explain how unethical choices by some players harms players who comply with the rules.

POST 1: Every game has its own ethical standards and practices, and the players are expected to follow these rules. One such rule is to follow the ethical ways and practices that would be defined by the game organizers. The players are not allowed to consume any energy booster that would influence the energy and instigate them to perform better. MLB steroids are consumed by the players as an energy booster which influences their performances. In ethical standards every player is expected to work hard and physically strengthen their capacity to deal with the opponents (Ferguson and Rueda, 2009). It would be inappropriate to consume steroids that would make them strong for that particular moment. Indulging into such an activity indicates that the players kill the motive of the game, and negatively impact the sportsmanship spirit. The other players who work hard ethically are discouraged to play the game as they have a higher possibility to lose the game (Elson et al., 2014).

There are strict standards and methods that are followed by the sport event organizers who ensure that the rules for ethical game playing activities are drafted and communicated with the players. Moreover, consumption of such drugs on a frequent basis directly impacts the physical and mental health condition of the players and thus it is not recommended by medical experts. Any player found consuming these drugs or steroids also faces a serious consequence that includes banning from the gaming activities for good or lose on the medal that was won by them. It is highly recommended to avoid any sort of unethical practices and behavior that would be used for increasing the performances for those particular gaming activities. A good sportsmanship sprit is the one where the players indulge into a proper gaming activity and restrain from doing anything wrong that would impact the overall purpose of organizing the game (Deterding et al., 2011).

Major League Baseball (MLB) is an American Professional baseball organization and the oldest of the major professional sports leagues in the United states and Canada. A total of 30 teams play in Major League Baseball: 15 teams in the National League (NL-1876) and 15 in the American League (AL-1901). The 1950s and 1960s were a time of expansion for MLB and the 1970s and 1980s were the years for game change. During the 1990s, the home runs dominated and media reported the use of anabolic steriods among MLB players in the mid-2000s. In 2006, investigation by Mitchell that many players in the use of performance-enhancing substances (PDE), including one or more player from every team. That cause the suspension of the most popular players from game based on Baseball’s original steroid testing policy, in effect from 2002 to 2005, provided for penalties ranging from a ten-game suspension for a first positive test to a one year suspension for a fourth positive test. Testing’s are done once per year since there is a chance of some players getting positive many times in a year.

The athletes used herbs and mushrooms in order to improve their performance in competition by making them faster, stronger or braver. Players should take inputs like good nutrition, weight training, watching game film and sports psychology, which help players to produce better performance that fans enjoy.

The use of performance enhancing drugs has decided the rise and fall in sports. But with that it also effect the game and players i.e. PEDs are unsafe for the player’s health because they have harmful side-effects, but the PEDs are used in games like Baseball, Boxer and Soccer which are more harmful than the PEDs. During Football players can suffer concussions and during marathon or basketball players injure their knees. So, we can say that sports can harm more than PEDs itself. Again question arises that, what motivate to use of steroid, it’s an obsession or perfection. There is always a confusion between obsession and perfection that drives players towards using illegal substances, but we don’t find it objectionable when people get to reach the top. As seen that PEDs make success to easy, on the one hand respect may be linked to preserving the integrity of sports. The respect for the not only for game but for the profession that an athlete chooses to hold and participate in and also respect for the other participants. The participant selves with integrity that needs to be respected.

The case further reveals that relationship between the salaries and PEDs, Steroids are used by some players who wish to gain an undue advantages over their competitors and enhance their performance. To control all this, there is an establishment of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) that deal with the unethical cases arising from players trying to be obtain advantages over others.

‘The spirit of sport should be hard work, good fitness training, positive thoughts and dignity or respect toward sport which you are playing, taking drugs is a way of succeeding with minimum work. And that results in severe health risks which aren’t even known and won’t be until the long time. This are the sufficient result to prove using PEDs is unethical to other players who respect their game and work hard to get succeed.
