Theories and Codes in Practice
Question Description
Health care administrators are frequently called upon to draft and consult on ethical guidance as it relates to the organization and to specific scenarios. They are also often the models for ethical leadership in their institution. Knowing ethical theory as a health care administrator is not enough. Codes of ethical conduct are also important, especially since complying with them can often be a necessary aspect of maintaining professional status and licensure. As a health care administrator, you need to know how to read codes of ethics and apply these policies in practice. It also requires the health care administrator to be sensitive to the ethical responsibilities of each party involved in a given situation. Sometimes ethical obligations of health care providers, administrators, and others may support or conflict with one another. It is the job of the health care administrator to promote professionalism and ethical behavior for all relevant stakeholders while efficiently resolving disputes.

In no more than 500 words discuss:
- Does the ACHCA Code require you, as a health care administrator, to report this physician’s behavior? Why or why not, based on the facts and the code? What provision(s) of the Code guide your decision?
- Whether you decide to report or not, who do you think you would report this type of information to?
- Why should we care about what codes of ethics say? What do they provide us that ethical theories do not, if anything? Why should healthcare providers pay attention to them and respect them?
