STUDENT ONE:

At the beginning of the semester, I was a little apprehensive toward my ability to grasp the neurological aspects of psychology. I was getting flashbacks of my time in cognitive psychology in undergrad—it was a struggle for me putting two and two together back then. This time around, however, I feel as though I am walking away with a good understanding of how brain structures function and how damage or delay in development of these structures affect children and adolescents multidimensionally.

I personally benefitted from the introductory course outcomes focusing on typical and dysfunctional brain development and organization and potential academic, social, and emotional struggles associated with atypical function, in general. The intro weeks allowed me to form a methodological base for future weeks. I enjoyed being able to focus on a single disorder or deficit each week. I constantly focused on the neurological side of each of these disorders and deficits—which, I understand that’s the whole point of the course; this was an area that I struggled to connect with in my undergrad studies.

I also enjoyed the task of relating each disorder to deficit to children and adolescents, specifically. Because this is a concentration course, I felt that I was actually learning valuable information for my future career. All in all, I am thankful for what this course has offered me this semester.

STUDENT TWO:

I was pretty intimidated with the title of this course “cognitive neuropsychology” that sounds scary. I saw “neuro” and automatically thought of Grays Anatomy where they are all neuro-surgeons and I would have to learn all sorts of areas I have never heard of. To me this was a bit of a review from when I was in undergrad. I also got my bachelors in psychology so wernicke’s and broca’s areas were pretty common words. I felt that the course outcomes were definitely stepped up to my knowledge and were also challenging, the tests were difficult unless you actually read and retained the material. I found the final to include all of the outcomes and really gave me a real life example of how a learning disability can be parts of psychological, physiological, and cognitive.
